Fish where the weather is cold and the water is hard!
Ice fishing Lake of the Woods and surrounding area might be cold but there is truly something special about reeling a good eating crappie or hard fighting lake trout though the ice. Is it because you bared the cold and drilled that hole through the ice?Or is it because you traveled 30 miles by snowmobile across 3 lakes and 2 portages though untouched snow and saw areas that you never thought you would see? What ever the right answer is, it will never get old being out there!
Our Winter Ice Fishing Season
Our Winter Ice Fishing Season
By late November we are really starting to get geared up for ice fishing. Our reels get new line, the portable shacks are taken out of storage and the snowmobiles are warmed up and ready for snow.
Around Christmas time, our area of Lake of the Woods will typically have 8" of ice and the slab crappies are going crazy, along with the tasty jumbo perch. The walleyes are going strong in the evenings during this time also.
By January 1st the lake has a road system plowed and travel by truck is safe. Permanent ice fishing shacks are set up on all the local hot spots. Our end of Lake of the Woods is well known for the crappies and jumbo perch and the fishing stays consistent right until we can not travel on the ice in the spring.
Truck travel is usually done by early March and ATV or snowmobile travel will end Late March depending on our season.

Lake Trout Fishing
Lake Trout Fishing
Lake Trout season opens January 1st. These fish are probably the hardest fighting fish our area has to offer in the winter time. We can stay local and fish the famous big trout area of Whitefish Bay on Lake of the Woods, or Crow(kakagi) Lake. Whitefish bay area is known for having lake trout over 20lbs and Crow Lake has better numbers of trout with a chance of a big trout.
But then our area has so much more to offer when it comes to catching Lake Trout. Now that the lakes are all frozen over, we can travel by snowmobile from lake to lake that are only accessible by airplane in the summer.
Traveling by snowmobiles is a great way to not only see the country side but get away from all the fishing pressure.
